Another trip to Newport Nails

It is Jemima's birthday Saturday so me and Isobel took her for some nail art...

11th August 2010

I just posted this on Neil Peart's forum but I quite like it so thought I would share here too... I'm going to see Rush that day in LA...

Me and my travel partner were planning on going to LA in August anyway (she wants to experience the heat but she could barely cope when we were out there last March so that should be interesting...). Due to the ash cloud hanging around plus British Airways and their strike issues, the price of flights has gone stupidly high so I was considering cancelling the whole thing but then I saw the tour dates...

We will stay at the Stillwell Hotel (838 S Grand Ave) in Downtown LA (it's a roach-infested fire trap but it's cheap and my friend has a thing for the boy on the front desk...). We'll be flying out the Saturday before so I will have had a few days to stal... err... "find" my ex in Pasadena and buy my own body weight in vegan cupcakes from Babycakes (130 E 6th Street).

Gig day will be start off with a Chinese foot massage in San Gabriel (502 E Valley Blvd - $15 an hour but please tip big). Then over to Studio City for a raw lunch at Sunpower Natural Cafe (3711 Cahuenga Blvd) and then vegan ice-cream at KindKreme (3701 Cahuenga Blvd). Follows a slow stroll over to Universal City Walk...

A quick indoor skydive - http://www.iflyhollywood.com/ then a pint at the Hard Rock Cafe (it just has to be done...).

Post gig, race back downtown before last orders at Hank's Bar in the lobby of the Stillwell.

Following day will have to be spent laying on the beach in Santa Monica, burning to a bright red crisp (that'll be my friend's reward for putting up with listening to my music - her favourite song is Smack That by Akon... just can't educate this girl...). But at least I control where we have lunch - Real Food Daily (514 Santa Monica Blvd).

Then of course it is back to the usual for us; Rahel's vegan Ethiopian treats (1047 South Fairfax Ave), $40 Thai massage at Pho-Siam (1525 Pizarro St), and being pretentious at The Edison (108 W 2nd St)...

I love LA... Getting to see decent bands is just a bonus...

Cashew cream cheese

I have been searching for the perfect vegan cream cheese recipe for ages. I don't like tofu ones at all so decided to switch to cashew cheese (the hard cheese I make is the cashew cheese from the RFD cookbook). Again, I couldn't find a good recipe so just made my own up.

I soaked a couple of cups of cashews over night and then discarded the water first thing (everyone recommends to use it but it looked gross). I threw them in a blender with a fresh cup of water, a spoon of nutritional yeast, a bunch of basil, 10 Kalamata olives, a tomato, and salt and pepper. Quick blast and then in the fridge.

It is soooo good! It's like a light version of hummus (which I am currently off). I had it this morning on Ryvita with a sliced olive. Now gonna have a bit more on freshly baked bread... Mmmm...

300!

I didn't think I would stick it out this long...

Post 100 was a review of the Hotel Stillwell in Downtown LA. 200 was a collection of my press photos. I thought 300 could be a retrospective.

I started my original blog about 6 years ago and it was literally pure vitriol. I was going through a rough patch and so I would rant about everything on my little corner of hate. After things got really bad, I stopped going online and after deleting my email address at that time, I forgot the log in info for the blog. I don't even remember the name anymore.

About 3 years ago I started Vegan Bento Wales. I got bored of it quickly though because I wanted to post about other stuff and I don't do that much cooking. I did keep it up for quite a while but it only got a few views a month.

I had a couple of other small blogs at the same time - Photo-a-day and Koshka's Wonderful World of Kawaii. But, again, I got bored.

At that point, I decided to start Malignant Narcissism.

It was, of course, named after the Rush song but had some resonance due to the subject matter... It's all about me, bitch.

It again started off with the usual hatred and a few rambling posts about some of my interests. I then decided to get rid of all my other blogs and combine them all here. It's now a random collection of many things - reviews, vegan cooking, photos (mainly of my pets and Betsey Johnson collection), and the odd rant. I try to keep it positive but this is me. I try not to be too political (David Cameron is an evil person) or too vicious (shill bidders should be burned at the stake).

My readership was steady for a couple of years (a few hits a day) but then I suddenly had an increase in interest and I can get 40 or 50 views a day now. Not bad seeing as I don't ever say anything of any real substance...

A few future projects include another trip to LA, my quest to obtain a new (free) Persian, and maybe... just maybe... I'll post some of my academic things...

Anger/Admiration

Can't be bothered to do individual posts for these so they all get lumped together.

I'll start with Anger because it's easier.

I am currently annoyed with the following...

Chase bank
I banked with Washington Mutual/WaMu for about 10 years until they went under. Chase took ownership of my account. I don't keep much money in my account while I am in the UK and just transfer in a couple of thousand dollars a few days before I fly out as it costs me less in exchange fees while I am in LA. I do, however, transfer about $6 a month into the account via Paypal just to keep it active. I only get statements every 3 months and I got my latest yesterday to discover Chase had very kindly emptied my account for "fees"... Fees for what??? I have a free checking account! I am so angry. They have given me no warning or explanation. I now have to close my account (because they suck) and will have to open up one with HSBC because at least I can go to a branch pretty much anywhere in the world... Chase are tossers though.

National Rail website
As I am very reliant on the trains to get to work, I use the National Rail website to check live departures before I leave every morning; it prepares me for any problems (such as the time those two men were hit by a train just outside Cardiff early one morning after they had robbed the camping store and tried to escape along the tracks on dirt bikes... that messed up my day no end and I ended up driving into Cardiff which always sucks). Well anyway the website has very kindly decided that "Cardiff Central" no longer exists. I have tried everything and it just wont recognise the station or its code. I am currently leaving extra early for work in the hope that there are no problems...

Provamel
I ended up in the local health food shop a few weeks ago and decided to pick up a few new things including sos-age rolls (TVP is disgusting and should be banned), tofu samosa wraps, and Provamel yofu. I opened the yofu after a few days of leaving it sitting in my fridge. It had about a month on the use by date. I had a little bit and then sealed it and put it back in the fridge. The morning of day two, I had a bit more. Same in the evening. Day three, I took it out of the fridge and discovered it had gone totally furry (don't know if you have ever seen the type of mould that grows on soya yoghurt but it is incredibly aggressive and brightly coloured...). I was angry so my mom called Provamel while I seethed in the background (you don't want me complaining...). She explained the problem and then the clerk took a few details. The woman asked what flavour it was and mom relayed it was the plain because I am allergic to the other flavours. The woman asked why and she explained because they contain locust bean gum (one of my many no-no ingredients). The woman went "oh how silly! None of our products contain locust bean gum". I went straight on their website and THERE IT WAS! LOCUST BEAN GUM! It is in all of the flavoured items. I could have taken her word for it, tried something without checking, and DIED! That would not look good for their products!!! They have sent my £5 in vouchers for the furry yofu but only one £1 voucher per transaction is allowed so they are gonna love me at Holland and Barratt when I pay for 5 soya milkshakes individually...

Onto the adoration...

Ord Tea Tree cream
When I was in LA last year, I had that mosquito bite me and ended up with a badly infected tattoo and could barely walk for a week afterwards. This is due to my skeeter syndrome - hyper-allergic to insect bites. I bought various (non-vegan) treatments because Kay said if I didn't she was taking me to the hospital and my medical insurance does not cover minor things like that... Nothing worked and I really suffered. When I got home, my leg was so badly swollen that I had to keep it packed in ice for 4 days (starting 6 days after I got the original bite). I've also had a series of bites over the last year that have left my badly scarred (I even lost a small mole on my arm because of one and that freaks me out...). I started scouring the internet to try to find something that would help. I ended up finding this Ord cream on the Vegan Store website. I bought a tube (at £5) and figured I would give it a go. Within a couple of days, I had a bite on my neck. I put the cream on and it was gone by morning. A week or so later, I had a small spot outbreak due to the sudden high temperatures so put this cream on two mornings running and everything cleared up really nicely. I've just put it on three bites I got whilst walking the dog by the canal and I know it will be fine by morning... Vegan relief for five quid...

Music
I bought a couple of MP3 albums the other day that are so good - The Best of Burlesque and Sugar In My Bowl: Hard Drivin' Mamas - Vintage Sex Songs 1923 - 1952. I haven't bought much music recently so it was nice to have something new on my iPod plus these songs are great anyway! I'm also listening to a lot of Brian Setzer, Joe Perry, Kid Rock, Roger Taylor, and Rush. I moved away from music for a long time because of the memories but I am getting there... I feel terrible for not being aware of what was happening to Ronnie James Dio these last few months. My heroes from the last 20 years deserve more.

Little things...
I am taking my sister's daughters for manicures on Thursday plus I am having my hair cut. My most obvious Jewish trait is my thick hair (which my manager commented today was "stunningly beautiful" but I just find hot and annoying). I used to have it cut short for the summer but last summer I discovered the joys of thinners... Gonna let the hairdresser do what she wants as long as I feel lighter afterwards... I am truly lucky to be able to pursue my academic interests as easily as I can. I'm also getting good at cooking. I will try two new things tomorrow - one is definitely going to be a soft cashew cheese and I might make something sweet also. Maybe something out of the Babycakes book...

Review: Hugo!

-*****

That's MINUS ***** folks!

Hugo, Hugo, Hugo...

You are everything I hate about the internet in one abusive little ball...

I've mentioned this in passing previously but when I went to LA last year, me and Kay decided to review various things on Yelp afterwards. We had had an absolutely horrible experience at Shojin where we had got some serious attitude from the waiter who obviously didn't want a young Indian woman and a (slightly older) Jewish woman eating in his restaurant. We left and went to another restaurant where we could get decent cocktails and no snide abuse. I, of course, posted a review of our negative experience. I was completely factual and polite and stated that I would never bother with Shojin again. This was my OPINION due to my EXPERIENCE. I am allowed that. It is my money I would be spending and I choose what goes into my body...

Almost immediately, I got a message from Hugo. He stated that we obviously deserved the rude treatment (maybe he doesn't like Indians and Jews either?) and that Shojin are far superior to me and said I should just fuck off back to Wales (although he didn't say Wales... he said "Cardiff, England"... Never mind...). Hugo also said that I was a negative person because I didn't enjoy being treated like shit by someone who was clearly above their station. He was really quite aggressive in his comments.

I sent him a very polite but direct "Grow up", blocked Hugo, and left it at that.

Over the next few weeks, Hugo stalked me on Yelp. Every time I posted a review, he posted the next review which had nothing to do with the original item being reviewed and was instead a review of me! eg, I reviewed a music venue in Bristol. He then reviewed me for not liking my treatment at Shojin and told everyone I was a terrible person.

I reported him to the admin who eventually deleted his harassment but he was, unfortunately, allowed to continue to post on Yelp. I left Yelp, largely due to this (and a difference of opinion over censorship...).

So moving on...

Everyone (now) knows that Hugo is married to Mary, the owner of Mary's Secret Garden vegan restaurant in Ventura. Hugo has spent... well... not to over-exaggerate but FOREVER... posting glowing positive reviews of MSG (and Shojin which he apparently likes) all over every possible review site whilst bashing all other vegan restaurants in Southern California. He has always hidden who he is but word got out.

I am of the opinion that if you review something you are closely involved with, you are behaving fraudulently - you are giving false impressions to consumers who will be taken advantage of due to your bias.

I have also since found out that Hugo harasses the crap out of anyone that gives MSG or Shojin a neutral or negative review to the point where these people also leave the review sites and their reviews go with them. This means that the reviews that do get seen are all falsely slanted towards the positive.

Hugo has finally been publicly caught out.

mr meaner posted the following review of Mary's Secret Garden on QuarryGirl.com (probably the best vegan review site out there) -

http://www.quarrygirl.com/2010/05/21/marys-secret-garden-in-ventura-no-garden-no-secrets/#comment-13548

The review was factual - the portions were very small, the food bland, and the prices extortionate. Oh, and the toilet is in the kitchen... Eww...

Hugo, of course, started his usual crap.

A quick IP check revealed he was yet again trying to suppress honest reviews by pretending to be a regular customer. (Full details are included in that link so I am not going to go into detail here. It makes very interesting reading, though, as do the other links from that page).

Hugo is a truly terrible person. He hides behind his computer while he bullies and harasses the vegan community into accepting his propaganda. He is a vile little being that does not even deserve to be described as a "man". It is because of him and his ilk that the vegans get such a bad reputation on the review sites.

So...

I travel a lot. I spend unbelievable amounts of time (and money) in California. But I will say now...

I will NEVER visit Mary's Secret Garden. I will NEVER give them any money. I will NEVER even give them the chance.

I urge everyone else to follow my lead. This business does not deserve to continue, purely due to Hugo's behaviour.

Hugo - you obviously have deep-rooted personal issues and I hope you get help. Anyone who thinks what you are doing is acceptable is obviously suffering extremely. Stop harming other businesses with your malicious comments. Crawl back into your hovel and hush up. The entire vegan community knows what you are now.

Pathetic.

COCK!

That is all.

Review: Sian Lloyd - A Funny Kind of Love

**

I am loathed to diss a bitter sister but...

OhMyGod! What a bitter sister!

The book starts off relatively well with stories of life growing up in South Wales and follows her career nicely but then it degenerates into an absolute rant-fest.

"Lembit doesn't clean the toilet"

"Lembit's overdrawn at the bank"

"Lembit drinks"

"Lembit spends too much time with his friends"

I could go on...

If it was that bad, why stick it out?

The contradictions also annoy me. She claims she was the one that left and was so happy to but then why write such a pitiful book? She keeps banging on about the same old things. Get over it. Also, she claims she is a feminist but feminists do not behave like that.

Then there is the appalling spelling and grammatical errors.

I am glad I only paid 40p for the book.

Lembit Opik's next move...

Aside from the stand-up comedy thing.

The most obvious thing he could do would be...

DATING LEMBIT OPIK!

Brad Garrett did it in the US and had lots of very attractive women fighting over him (including me...). Of course, he had some real cows arses fighting over him too but we got rid of those quickly. I wasn't able to be a finalist on the series because of travel problems but if Lembit did it, I would happily wade my way to the front of the queue on principle.

I think it would actually be quite popular. Women obviously like him (albeit sometimes rather vacuous women...) and men are jealous of him (check out the comments on today's Daily Mail article and you'll see what I mean).

They could have a panel of judges like Brad did like that Cheeky bird and Charles Kennedy...

I'll use the same promo video I used for Dating Brad Garrett but just change the name. Recycling is good for the environment, you see...

My only real change would be the women should be able to choose the dates. On Brad's, he did and one of my biggest worries was being taken to a steakhouse, especially after I said in my promo that I was vegan. Some comedians just aren't funny...

Dunno what I'd suggest for a date, though. Something different... Indoor skydiving in Milton Keynes? Dolphin spotting in Skye? The Santa Run in Newtown? Cleaning up graffiti in Birmingham?

So Lembit... Come and get me...

Or let me be a producer on the show... I don't like people looking at me, after-all...

(And if this ever does get made... be warned! I've copyrighted the idea so don't steal my shit unless you want me to spank you... and not in the fun way...).

Review: Nailcraft

**

21 High Street Arcade
Cardiff
CF10 1BB
02920 222 052
http://www.nailcraft.co.uk/

I took Isobel to Nailcraft last Autumn for her birthday. I hadn't had a manicure in years and it was her first one so we didn't really know what to expect.

The place was dead when we arrived (should have triggered a warning bell, in hindsight). We were greeted and my details were taken to set up a file for me. We chose our nail colour - I went for a stunning China Glaze green and Isobel selected a bright pink.

I had a cut, file, buff, cuticle work, a hand and arm massage (unsure what was in the lotion but I later had a really bad allergic reaction and ended up with a bright red rash... I'm guessing it was something like beeswax), basecoat, two layers of colour, and topcoat. Then under the dryers and a final liquid put on as we left to preserve the shine.

Isobel had the same only of course hers took less time and she had some sparkly stars added to her nails.

The service was great - the staff were nice girls and very friendly. My issue is with the quality...

Aside from my rash, my nails never dried. 8 hours later they were still tacky and would catch on everything. I ended up with ridges of polish instead of having smooth nails. The colour started chipping off the next day and they were wrecked by day 3 so I had to remove everything and paint them myself. Also... I am not necessarily blaming them but afterwards my nails became incredibly brittle and started splitting. I have always had very strong nails so this seemed weird to me...

Isobel's were the same. They did not dry and were ruined after a few days.

£40 for the two of us.

I should have gone back to complain but I genuinely thought this was normal...??? Now, of course, I know it is not and no decent nail salon would let you leave with wet nails.

I wont go there again.

Review: Newport Nails

****

Newport Nails
11 Skinner Street
Newport
NP20 1GY
01633 222644

I came home from work one evening about a month ago to find a post-it note stuck to my computer monitor from my niece, Isobel. It merely said "Newport Nails, £5".

I was able to deduce that Isobel fancied a manicure...

Izzy turned 9 last September and I decided she had enough stuff so instead of buying her more junk, I took her for her very first manicure and then for lunch at Ask. The manicure was actually a bit of a let down (I may review one day...) but we had a fun experience, all in all.

Since then, she's been all in to indulgences... She went for a personal shopper day with her mother at a major department store yesterday (my sister's 40th birthday gift from myself and my mother). Plus she comes over my house for regular face masks and she sits and goes through my make-up collection far too regularly...

So it turns out that her friend had gone to Newport Nails and had her nails painted with nail art for £5. Isobel does belly dancing shows so asked if I would take her before her next one to have her nails done too. I needed some work done so figured we might as well.

Newport Nails is like the places you get in California where all the workers are from Asia and probably are not clearing minimum wage (or if they are, only just).

We went in and I asked for a manicure and for Isobel to have her nails painted.

The woman started on me and my first concern was the lack of cleaning of tools. The nail file and clippers used on myself were put straight back in the storage box without being sprayed (or even autoclaved).

While I soaked my nails in a mini-bath, she painted Isobel's nails and then put her under the dryers. She then really got to work on me... File, sanding and repair of a split nail, buff, nice hand massage with cranberry lotion, base coat, two layers of a stunning red, then top coat and then I sat under the dryers.

Second concern... she cut me while she was trimming my cuticles... It didn't get infected or anything but I did have to scrub my hand when I got home...

Isobel then had her nail art done. She had the colours suggested by the woman and also had no say in the design but that is fine as she would never have made her mind up. It's Izzy's nails in the photo. As Isobel said... "My hand are very, very brown... and yours are very, very pale..." "Yeah well! I'm anaemic!"

Isobel's friend also came down and had hers done at the same time and was impressed with the results.

The staff speak very limited English but they are lovely. The woman was telling me all about her son and I was attempting to explain home education and belly dancing...

My manicure only cost £10. Isobel's was a fiver. We are going back for my other niece's birthday at the end of the month.

They stock OPI, China Glaze, and Elise.

Between layers of polish, my nails were allowed to dry under a heat lamp. They were completely dry and amazingly smooth when we left. My index fingers started chipping after 5 days and my thumbs went on day seven. Not bad.

There are loads of these places springing up all over Newport and Cardiff but I think Newport Nails will be my favourite.

Four stars because it's cash only and I am part of the credit age...

Lovin' my Shape Ups...

I bought my Skechers Shape Ups about 6 weeks ago. I got them for £35 on ebay (the seller was having a crazy-priced-Skechers day and my mom got herself a new pair of D-Lites for £20 at the same time). I was unsure if they would work and struggled with them to begin with because they made me feel a little tired...

But...

I've worn them for the last 6 weeks and I am so impressed!

I wear them to work 4 days a week and I literally run to and from Cardiff station in them. I'll also wear them for half a day on two of my off-days plus the third if it is raining. I take the dog running in them and I will race all over town in them.

They have big squidgy soles so they do not put any extra pressure on my joints (having FMF means some days are very painful...) so I can walk further without feeling sore. I fell off the front step while I was leaving for work this morning and that would normally jar my back but this time my shoes just bounced and I didn't feel any pain at all.

On Sunday, I noticed that my legs were feeling hard and toned and looking pretty damn good, I might add... This evening I noticed my ass is higher than I remember it... Not like on my shoulders or anything but certainly more defined than it was... My skinny fit jeans are now baggy (yay! An excuse to go shopping!) and the best thing? I can run for the train without getting out of breath.

These shoes really do work and I love them dearly.

Ronnie James Dio

It was quite a surprise for me to check my emails this morning and hear that Ronnie had died. I didn't even know he was unwell (I don't keep up with the music industry much anymore).

I had seen Ronnie in concert a couple of times, supporting Alice Cooper, and he would always pose for photos for me. He was an immensely talented singer/songwriter.

I've always had issues with what he said about Cozy Powell after he died but if Brian May can forgive him that...

RIP Ronnie.

Mmmm curry...

I have fancied curry for a few days but my favourite vegan places are disagreeing with me right now as they use far too much chilli. I just made this recipe up as I went along - sweet potato, spinach, chick peas, a small onion, 3 diced tomatoes, two teaspoons of curry powder, and two teaspoons of garam masala. It's a nice gentle dish. It's tastes great without me feeling sick afterwards. Will have to remember this one...

"...courteously anti-establishment..."

A brief look at Lembit Opik's voting record.

Against Labour's anti-terrorism laws - I agree... The laws are not workable. They make all outsiders potential terrorists and we don't need Britain to be seen in that racist light.

Against the smoking ban - I disagree... I worked in bars from the age of 19 to 24 and I absolutely hated going home stinking of smoke. The smell just wouldn't wash out of my hair and I had a constant early-morning cough. The ban came in after I stopped working in clubs but I bet I would have loved it... Now I just enjoy going to a bar and not having to put up with other peoples' anti-social actions. If you want to smoke, fine. Do it away from me.

For EU integration - I agree... There is no point in keeping us removed from Europe. OK there are problems with the economy in Greece right now but we could help with that.

Against replacing Trident - I agree... Nuclear war is not good for anyone... We don't need it. We need to establish better relations with other nations rather than racing to build the biggest, most destructive bomb.

Against introducing foundation hospitals - I agree... Hospitals need better regulation but it should be centralised. It's a sneaky move towards the American system and I don't like it...

Against a stricter asylum system - I agree... I have no problem with immigration. My family came here as immigrants (I am part of the first generation to be born in the UK). If people are struggling so much in their own countries (for whatever reason) that they feel the need to come here, they should be made welcome.

Against the hunting ban - I disagree... I think the ban should be more strictly enforced. There is no justification whatsoever to kill defenceless animals in any way.

Against allowing ministers to intervene in inquests - I agree... With all due respect, what does your average politician know about the workings of a criminal investigation? Some may be lawyers but that doesn't make them criminologists... And it would be too easy to use the suffering of others to further their own political ambitions.

Against ID cards - I agree... It just isn't necessary. The police already use profiling and ID cards will be a way to further harass innocent people, just because of the way they look. Also, why should I pay for an ID card? I pay enough for my passport and my driving licence.

For laws to stop climate change - I agree... It seems like people don't care that their current actions are destroying the planet. We can actually see the damage being done and yet they choose to ignore it.

For removing hereditary peers from the House of Lords - I agree... Just because daddy was rich does not mean you deserve a place in the House.

For a wholly elected House of Lords - I agree... Best man for the job rather than the richest...

For equal gay rights - I agree... Everyone deserves equal rights, no matter what their lifestyle.

Against student top-up fees - I agree... I actually think education should be free. But then I am still carrying massive student debt...

Against the Iraq War - I agree... I was so angry when they went to war. They lied about their reasons and threw away the lives of so many young men and women.

For an Investigation into the Iraq War - I agree... (see above).

Against greater autonomy for schools - I agree... I'm not a big fan of the current education system; I can see how it failed my generation... I only got where I am because of my own determination. However, schools need to be closely regulated to save them from failing even more children in even worse ways.

(I am in the process of writing a much more detailed evaluation of every vote he has ever cast but it is a massive task and will take me some time...).

I quit...

Had enough of the absolute weirdos on plentyoffish.com and deleted my account. In my 6 days on there, I had over 2000 emails and not a single one of them was from someone I would actually consider meeting. I had loads of creepy old men (I normally like creepy old men, mind...) send me the most depraved shit.

My favourite lines...

(obviously) "I'm going to my parents' static caravan in West Wales this weekend. Wanna come?"

"I'm a London banker and I drive a porsche" (he was, admittedly, quite cute but I speak to porsche drivers as part of my job and they are all wankers...)

"I'm open to new things... will you fist me?"

"I think ur soo cute... and I'm rich btw"

"Do you wanna see a photo of my cock?" (this was his opening line...)

"My wife's in hospital. Can I come and visit you?"

I had quite a few guys contact me and when I did not respond, they got very aggressive with me. Surely common sense says that if a woman ignores your advances, she's not interested? Maybe I am naive...

And apparently my comment of "No car? Move on to the next profile... same goes for no job and still living in your mom's spare room" on my page caused bad feeling with a select few. Mainly jobless, carless, momma's boys...

I really wasn't looking for anything on there anyway. It was purely a bit of fun to keep up with the dating scene, as it were. When I finally decide I want to date again, I don't want to be so out of touch that I am left behind the young totally un-cougar-like ladies that will be populating the bars and clubs of South Wales...

I may go back on there eventually when I am in more of a position to document what is going on. I know there are like a million books out there on dating but you always feel like your own situation is totally unique.

I've had some great chat up lines in the real world too...

"You look like my dead wife"

"I'm just on my way to court but can I take you out for a drink after my sentencing?"

"I've never... *ahem*... met a Welsh woman before"

Then there's the nice ones... My exes all must have said the right thing to me for me to actually bother with them.

One of the nicest ones I ever heard was when I was living in LA. I was on my way to uni and I was in a bit of a hurry. I had just got off the Metro at Pershing Square and was going up the escalator to street level. A man to the side of me said "You have the most beautiful eyes. They are just like my daughter's. She has green eyes too" and proceeded to show me a photo of her. I turned to him and said "I have blue eyes..." and I walked off. Of course, I have always regretted that. He was a good looking guy and he was obviously a nice man but I was in a different place then. I had just met Mike (we barely knew each other though) and I was only a kid myself (20) so I had no interest in anyone else's children.

I am sure he managed to find better than me, anyway.

Lembit Opik

I find Lembit Opik very difficult.

He has some opposing political views to me in certain areas (such as fox hunting - regulation rather than a ban - and his objection to the ban on cigarette advertising).

He makes questionable choices in his personal life.

He has written for disturbing publications.

If even a tenth of what Sian Lloyd said is true then... wow...

He's publicity-seeking to the point where I actually cringe a little.

However...

His political views are generally in line with mine (LibDem, you see).

He's from an incredibly intelligent family. My mother is an astronomer so I have been hearing about the Opiks my whole life. Despite his writings appearing in the Sunday Sport(?), you can see he is obviously a gifted man.

Most of what he says actually makes sense, ie, the meteor thing.

He absolutely throws himself into his charity work with a level of genuine dedication that many others in the public eye just feign.

He has a self-deprecating humour that makes him so much more approachable than other politicians.

He will embarrass himself for the sake of his cause.

Then there's that accent.

So yeah, I'm undecided...

I think he is much better for politics than the depressing lot we have in power right now. I'd like to read his autobiography (if he ever writes one) so I guess that is a good sign. Now he's temporarily out of government, it would be interesting to see what he does next. A move into TV seems most obvious.

Not totally unrelated... Theresa May is the Equalities Minister. She has repeatedly shown herself to be against gay rights. Does she really stand for equality?

Where Brian May went wrong

I have been keeping a casual eye on the Save Me campaign and I have come to a few conclusions about it...

Brian May made a massive mistake when he told all of the supporters to vote Labour. So many people in this country were dissatisfied with the government so voting Labour was never going to achieve any good. While there were some LibDem MPs who supported repealing the hunting ban, the majority (including their leader) were against it. Brian should have encouraged everyone to vote for them because then there would have been a chance of real change. Instead we end up with a Tory government with LibDem help. They are not strong enough to really control the Torys and so the whole Save Me campaign has been a failure.

Now, of course, Brian is posting positive encouragement for the new Tory government. Is he insane??? He obviously has no scruples as he will jump into bed with whatever party grabs his attention. I am disappointed.

And as for the Facebook group? Squabbling little children. There is no moderation so abusive trolls are able to dominate the place and destroy any positive message about animals rights that the group could have spread. Terrible.

The Don'ts and Don'ts of online dating...

Purely for ha-has, I joined plentyoffish.com. Kay had already joined and said it was full of really nice men so I thought I would have a look.

I'll start off by saying I am not looking for a boyfriend. I still miss Mike. I thought it would be interesting to see what was out there, though.

In the four days I have been on there, I have been absolutely flooded with emails from random guys. I have heard some of the worst chat up lines ever. I mean absolutely horrendous ones.

There was one stunningly gorgeous guy who messaged me. Aside from being a little young for me, he was perfect - great body, nice face, good job, lived local, etc. But... he repeatedly asked me to fist him. I mean... come on! You don't ask a stranger that! I politely declined to meet him.

I have had to devise a system to limit who I respond to. I will not respond to the following...
- anyone with no picture. He could be an absolute mutant for all I know...
- anyone who spells basic words wrong
- anyone who poses in their pics with alcohol. I think that is so base. In all of the photos ever taken of me, I think there are maybe two where I have alcohol - one where I was holding a friend's pint and one where you can just see the tip of a beer bottle that I was hiding behind my back. I would NEVER put those photos out on a dating site. Posing with booze makes you look like an oaf. Stop it.
- anyone who starts a conversation by asking me for sex
- all ugly fat blokes
- anyone who has a photo of them playing on a Playstation/Xbox (Wii is allowed)
- anyone that poses with their kids in their photos
- anyone that mentions a wife/girlfriend/live-in partner in the first email (I have nothing against banging married men but I really don't want to hear about how she doesn't understand you...)

I am sure there are other rules I have temporarily forgotten...

Most of the guys who contact me are total oddballs. How can anyone think "I am going to my parent's static caravan in West Wales this weekend. Wanna come?" will attract women?

Kay still insists it is full of nice boys...

A little fun...

(I stole this from Facebook and don't agree with all of the points - I will never have an issue with immigration - but it makes interesting reading...)

The 20 reasons to vote Labour out in the most important election ever!

1) Violent crime has sky-rocketed under Labour. It has more than doubled! You're now more likely to be mugged or violently attacked in London than in New York. There were 1.2 million violent crimes reported in 2006 alone!!

2) The National Debt under Brown has doubled! That means that anything they claim to have done which is positive has actually only been achieved because they've spent money we don't have as a country, and now we're suffering for it in the economic crisis. Imagine I told you to trust me with your finances and that I'd give you a better quality of life. So I take out a credit card on your name and start buying cars, yachts, houses, etc, with money you don't have. What happens when the bank wants it's money back? You'll suffer! That's what Labour have done to us.

3) Labour have allowed immigration to become uncontrolled and out of hand, placing a large strain on the public sector When Brown was questioned about this by one of his own supporters, he called her a "bigot", showing how out of touch they are with the public.

4) Labour has made us into a "Nanny-State" - introducting notions to take away our political freedoms, such as the ID card scheme (which does not work!). People died for us to be able to enjoy these freedoms and Labour have thrown them away.

5) Labour has turned it's back on the working-class, the people they are supposed to represent, in various ways - raising council tax for those that aren't in financial position to pay it, introducing university top up fees, withdrawing £28m in Freedom Passes which allow free travel on public transport for pensioners, etc.

6) Brown wanted to remove tax relief for employer-based childcare vouchers, which save parents thousands of pounds a year.

7) "Homes" have become unaffordable for first time buyers under Brown

8) Labour has been "in-bed" with many of the bankers that contributed to out credit crisis. Brown enabled a bail out of the banks but has also allowed those banks to make huge profits since then, announcing record bonuses in the process. All that while regular people struggle to make ends meet.

9) Over 40% of 11 year olds can't read, write or show basic maths skills when they leave primary school!

10) The NHS is forecasting a gross defecit of £883m this year.

11) Our troops have been sent to war, and continue to be sent to war, WITHOUT THE PROPER EQUIPMENT! This has led to countless deaths!

12) Carbon Emissions have been rising for the 2nd year in a row!

13) There are almost 1 million people unemployed in the UK and on benefits - the highest since 2001

14) Over 1.2 million young people are unemployed and not in education.

15) Child Poverty - over half of inner-city kids live below the poverty line!

16) Over 2 million pensioners live in poverty and they have to make decisions like, "do I stay warm in the winter by putting the heating on, or should I pay for my medicines?" They can't afford both!

17) NHS waiting lists - Over 1 million people are currently waiting over a year for basic but vital diagnostic tests, such as MRI scans, CT scans, and hearing tests

18) 100,000 dentists have left the NHS since Labour came to power making it extremely difficult for people to get treatment on the NHS

19) Wasting tax payers' money - The ID card scheme may cost approx £20bn or more according to the London school of economics. It has been proved to fail in tackling the issues it's supposed to. That money would be better spent on the NHS and more police officers on the beat This £20bn is not included in the £90 billion that has been wasted by this government as proved by the Taxpayers Alliance.

20) Brown broke promises and denied the people a democratic voice when signing the EU treaty without a referendum

Voted first thing...

It was surprisingly busy. Remains to be seen what will happen... I will be up super early tomorrow to get the results.

I took my niece for a manicure in town. It was one of those places where the workers are immigrants from East Asia who speak very little English and get paid below minimum wage. It was OK though. My Manicure cost £10. Isobel's cost £5 and that included nail art. One of her friends came down and got hers done at the same time. Only slight concerns were the lack of cleaning of tools and the fact that the girl cut me... She was nice, though, and was telling me about her son. I left her a large tip.

Isobel wants to go back for her birthday. Maybe...

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Was half way through preparing dinner when I decided I needed something a little Mexican... I got the recipe for the edamame guacamole from the Whole Foods blog. Also had my previously posted potato salad (made with basil instead of dill), fresh salad, and kidney bean and carrot burgers (adapted from an Isa Chandra Moskowitz recipe).

I have a load of freshly prepared mangos and strawberries in my fridge but I am just too stuffed to even think about those right now :)

Why Brian May has REALLY pissed me off...

I have been a Queen fan forever. I have a Queen-related tattoo on my upper arm, I've seen Brian in concert 6 or 7 times (with Q+PR, the Brian May band, Status Quo, Alice Cooper, Roger Taylor...). I've bought all the albums in all formats, read Brian's books, hell... I was even in the fan club until they tried to charge me twice for my renewal. I always thought I would support Brian, even though he seems to be getting more opinionated and eccentric as he is getting older...

When he announced the Save Me campaign, I was very excited as he was fighting for animal rights, as indeed I have for many years. He said from the start it was not affiliated with any political party - it was for the animals. The idea was tactical voting to ensure animal rights were preserved. I'm all for that. Because of the campaign, I switched my voting allegiance from Green to Liberal Democrat for the first time as it is so important to keep the Tories out of power. Things were going well until there was a bit of bitching on the Facebook page about how the Lib Dems sucked and everyone should vote Labour...?

OK... Facebook isn't really for me, anyway. I left the group and continued following Brian's soapbox.

So a few days ago, I go on Brian's page and he's posted this ode to Hilary Benn (OK, I have no issue with Hilary Benn per se - he's a vegetarian and seems beyond reproach in his political dealings... but he's Labour...). In itself, I can live with that. What I can't live with, though, is Brian's announcement that he will do everything he can to ensure Benn (and in turn Labour) remains in power.

Brian is using animals to promote his own political views and that sucks. It just makes him look immoral.

The Labour government have failed. It's that simple. They came to power when I was 16. A brief highlight of my adult life under Labour... 2 years on the dole with no training offered (because I was a graduate), consistently rising taxes, and £18,500 of student loan still to pay SEVEN YEARS after I graduated. The only reason things are not worse for me is because I spend a large amount of my time in California. I don't blame the recession on them but they could have done so much more to help; there were mass redundancies in my office... my brother in law (a father of 4) was also made redundant. OK they bailed out the banks but so did the US and then Obama stepped in and said the banks had to pay them back. None of that here... There is wide-spread corruption within the Labour government (all together now! EXPENSES!).

And, Brian, you WANT to keep them in power???

I'm not going to start the rich vs poor argument because I don't believe that but Brian must seriously be detached from reality if he thinks it is OK to play on peoples deep-felt emotions to keep these people running the country.. Benn may be the best man for the job but that cannot be at the expense of our national pride and self-respect. It's the working man who has no interest in animals that will suffer most from this move.

I could not live with myself if I subjected the country to another 5 or so years of this. We have to keep the Tories out but Labour are not the answer. We now have a third party with a real chance of winning who will bring change. That's what we need.

So tomorrow...

Vote.

Even if you evaluate all the facts and still decide to vote Labour, that's fine; as long as YOUR conscience is clear.

Just vote.

Vote as if your life depends on it.

Because it does.

(Oh and I still love Roger Taylor... he's a rich bastard and doesn't try to hide it... he also said having his own soapbox would be - and I paraphrase - pretentious...).
